Conferencing 101

Conferencing refers to the whole gamut of activities that involve meeting with people to confer about a topic or issue. Conferencing include web conferencing, videoconferencing, computer conferencing, synchronous conferencing, data conferencing and conference calls. Web conferencing pertains to the services that allows for conferencing to be shared with remote locations. In web conferencing, a recorded copy of the event is presented. Web conferencing enables for simultaneous sharing of information across locations. Web conferencing is particularly popular in meetings, training events, short presentations and lectures. Videoconferencing allows for communication among parties through two-way video interactions. Computer conferencing features teleconferencing supported by one or more computers. It allows for multiple access of a common database and mediated by a controlling computer. It features the interconnection of two or more computers working in a distributed manner following a collective application process.

Synchronous conferencing, on the other hand, refers to online chat. It may include audio/ video conferencing and instant messaging systems with chat functions. Synchronous indicate that the conferencing is in real-time chat function, unlike emails were messages are left and answered later. Data conferencing pertains to the communication session between two parties sharing computer data in real time. The features present in the screen, keyboard, mouse, camera can be shared or controlled by another computer. Finally, conference calls are telephone calls wherein the calling party can share the audio portion of the call of more than one called party. Conference calls may enable for the called party to participate during the call, or may only listen to the call and cannot speak. Conference calling is sometimes referred to as ATC (Audio Tele-Conference).

Conferencing may be used to facilitate communication between parties of different location. It is often used in business to coordinate with another party in outside the company or even country. Conferencing is particularly getting popular because of the numerous smart phones and tablets in the market. Conferencing in some countries is used in conjunction with email to provide reporting and updates.
